Questions

What families ask us

What ages and hours do you serve?

The Willow room is for children ages 3 to 4 and the Hazel room for ages 4 to 5, including the kindergarten year. Mornings run 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, three or five days a week, and the long day in the Hazel room runs to 3:00 pm.

How does a tour work?

Tours run in October, January and March, in the morning while the rooms are working. A tour takes about an hour. You see both rooms, meet the teachers and ask anything you like. Children are welcome to come along.

What sets tuition?

The room, the number of mornings a child comes and whether a child stays for the long day. Our enrollment page and the tour show the current figures; the how tuition works page explains what each fee is for.

How is a place held, and how does the waitlist work?

A place is held once we have the registration and the signed enrollment agreement. When a room is full we keep a waitlist in the order families join, and we call each family when a place opens.

Is the school licensed, and what are the ratios?

Yes. Rowan is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. The license and the number of adults for each age group are on the safety page.

What is the weekly rhythm?

Every day begins and ends with circle. Monday is painting, Tuesday handwork, Wednesday baking, Thursday a walk and Friday soup and puppets. The rhythm stays the same from week to week, so children know what comes next.

Why no screens?

It is a choice about how we spend the morning: with hands, stories and each other. We don't use screens with children at school, and we are glad to talk about screens at home at the tour, with no judgment.

What about toilet learning?

We ask that children come to us able to use the toilet with a little help. If a child has an accident, a teacher helps them change calmly and without comment. Talk to us at the tour about where your child is.

How do you handle a hard day?

A teacher stays close, speaks quietly and gives the child time. We tell the family at pickup what happened, and we ask how we can help the next morning.

What should my child bring?

Layers of wool or cotton, a hat, rain boots, indoor shoes or slippers and a labeled bag with a full change of clothes. Families send lunch for the long day.

Still have a question?

Send it through the form, or call the school. We reply within one working day.
